Online Mag Your Coffee Break, brings rich reads to inspire the professional woman. With writers spanning the globe, content reaches even us PR girls all the way in Dallas. But what is a popular digital-mag without a fearless leader? At the helm – a world traveler with a enviable Rolodex, meet Charlotte Giver, Editor-in-Chief of YCB.
1. Tell me about yourself?
Originally I am from Helsingborg, a small town in the south of Sweden, but I have been travelling the world since high school. When I was 19 years old I moved to Connecticut and I lived here for about a year and a half. I studied English Literature at Fairfield University and took classes in Magazine Writing in New York City but decided to move to the UK in 2008 when I got accepted to the Media School at Bournemouth University – one of the UK’s top Universities for Public Relations. Here, I pursued a four-year Bachelors degree in PR. My first PR internship was at Red Light PR in Hollywood and after working there for about a year, I moved to Barcelona, Spain where I worked as a PR Account Executive at Suitelife Barcelona. I created YCB in 2012 and moved back to London. I guess I am a bit of a traveler.
What led to the online blogging webspace?
YCB was first a smaller career site where I wrote about PR, what it’s like working in the PR and fashion industry and gave career advice to my readers. To make a long story short, after working in PR in Los Angeles and Barcelona, I had expanded my network and I had fabulous contacts in the PR, fashion and entertainment industry. And from working on crafting press releases and pitches on a daily basis, I knew exactly where to find the latest fashion news and I wanted to do something with this information myself.
After I decided on the name, the website was created and very soon, I started receiving press releases from PR contacts all over the world. YCB was first launched in London in March 2012 and back then, I was receiving around 20 releases each day! There was no way that I could write up all of this content myself so, I started looking for writers and I was overwhelmed when I started receiving around 100 applicants on a daily basis. YCB rapidly grew from a smaller career site to a magazine for the professional woman!
What’s the inspiration behind the name Your Coffee Break?
Yes there is! Have you ever seen the movie ‘Morning Glory’? I am an early bird and like to get up early in the mornings, grab my coffee and head to the office. The name comes from waking up early every morning, working late hours and dreaming big! I worked in public relations in the big city – Los Angeles and Barcelona – and I must have had at least four coffees a day. After all, coffee is the best motivation and it certainly keeps you on top of the game!
Whats your favorite thing about YCB?
I love meeting inspiring people and I am so lucky to have the privilege to sit down and chat with talented business women, entrepreneurs and top bloggers, celebrities and designers every week. I meet new people every day and each day is just like a new adventure. I usually say that my job is very much like people watching but on a totally different level.
What makes Your Coffee Break different?
What’s unique about YCB…YCB is the perfect go-to magazine for city girls and go-getters. Being a career-focused woman myself, YCB is the perfect read together with my daily caffeine fix. The magazine has a great mix of career advice, professional interviews, fashion and trend reports, beauty, celebrity news, lifestyle and travel. The magazine provides its readers with career advice and motivational features whilst keeping them entertained and on trend. The YCB woman is a professional, sophisticated and elegant lady so all of these different sectors come together and gives her, her daily dose of motivation, luxe and style.
Lots of work! And a lot of dedication and motivation. I love what I am doing and I think that’s essential when it comes to running your own business. I have worked super early mornings-late nights and been drinking lots of coffee but one of the most challenging yet important parts of working towards YCB’s success is having a good team. I have gone through a few let-downs, tons of interviews and different colleagues but in the past few months, I feel very confident and comfortable with my team members.
You have several people involved in making YCB tick everyday…
Yes, At the moment I have 25 people working for YCB. I have two PR girls, one marketing manager and another person managing our social media accounts all working part-time. I have a big team of fashion writers, career writers and the rest are freelance writers and columnists. Many of our freelance writers and columnists are based in the US! As well as our go-to PR contacts. Most of them are located in Los Angeles and New York, sending us the latest news from the red carpet!
What advice do you have for interns just starting in the business?
Intern, intern, intern! Get hands-on experience, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Get a mentor in the industry or establish a good relationship with your supervisor at that internship and ask if he/she can send you examples on email pitches and press releases. How to pitch an editor is just as important as crafting a good press release so make sure you know exactly how to do this. There are many ways you can pitch an editor or a blogger so make sure you know the different ways and strategies before you land your first real job. Also learn how to follow up and maintain your relationship with media. Further, attend PR events and network! Contacts are everything in this industry!
What’s your favorite social media network to utilize for your site?
How do you connect with other bloggers?
I usually connect with bloggers at events, product launches or via twitter and email
What are some of your favorites that you follow?
Where do you see yourself going with your site in the next year?
I hope to be running YCB and it’s printed version ‘YCB EDITED’. I am currently working together with my designer on a few secret projects. I am very excited! I want to start working with bigger brands and clients around London, collaborating with career and PR sites in the UK and the US and reach out to the Hong Kong- market. Of course, I am looking forward to attending NYFW and LFW! Also, I am looking forward to start working on new projects with Liberty. We’ll be starting our collaboration with the luxe department store April 1st and I am very excited!
It’s no secret that Ms. Giver knows how to run a successful “coffee break” read but running the show always comes with dressing for success. So I asked Charlotte what’s her favorite day to night look? After all here at PRBlonde we’re about balancing it all – work and play. Anything that saves time – well that’s right up our alley.
